Carinae III-a is the kind of find that makes me feel like I have cracked the galaxy's little secret. I first heard about this moon as an early-game resource stop, and after a few jumps from Alpha Centauri I understood the hype. It sits in the level 20 Carinae system near the northwest corner of the Settled Systems, tucked close to Eta Cassiopeia. That neighborhood matters because Eta Cassiopeia is a system plenty of players visit during Sarah Morgan's personal quest, so Carinae is easier to stumble onto than some far-flung endgame rock. Even in 2026, with all the patches and updates Starfield has picked up, I still keep Carinae III-a on my shortlist for an early resource grind.

The moon itself is not much to look at from orbit. It circles the system's third planet, a gas giant that is hard to miss once you arrive. On the surface, Carinae III-a offers the usual bread-and-butter resources like iron, lead, and water, which is handy for basic outpost setup. The real draw, though, is Rothicite. In fact, this humble little moon is the only natural place in Starfield where I can mine Rothicite outside of buying it from vendors. That alone makes it a hidden gem, and trust me, I am not above treating a moon like a cash cow.

Why Rothicite Is Worth the Trip

Rothicite is not just a pretty rock with a fancy name. Its main uses are crafting Rothicite Magnets and researching Power Generation 4. Both feed into building advanced reactors for outposts, and those reactors are the most powerful outpost power sources in the game, each one providing 100 units of power. If you like building outposts that actually run like a well-oiled machine, this resource is worth its weight. Well, almost. The weight is a small catch, and I will get to that in a second.

Finding the deposits is no sweat. I use the hand scanner to spot mineral deposits hiding in plain sight, and if I press the outpost button while the hand scanner is open, the available resources within the outpost's range show up in the top left corner of the screen. Players with a rank 4 scanning skill can find the best mining spots from orbit, but I have done it without that perk and still come away with plenty. Once I find a Rothicite deposit, I drop an extractor. Like other metal extractors, the basic Rothicite extractor needs 4 aluminum, 5 iron, and 2 tungsten.

Extractor Need Amount
Aluminum 4
Iron 5
Tungsten 2

My Early-Game Loop

My routine on Carinae III-a is simple and low-key addictive. I jump into Carinae, find the gas giant, and land on the first moon. I scan around for Rothicite, set up a small outpost, and let the extractors do the heavy lifting. Then I come back later, scoop up the goods, and either use them for outpost reactors or sell the surplus. The base value of Rothicite is 106, but vendors will likely only pay around 15 credits unless I level my commerce skill. That sounds like pocket change, but Rothicite extractors produce quickly, and it does not take long to build up thousands of samples to sell. It is a tidy sum if you are patient.

The only real headache is the weight. Rothicite has a mass of 2.20, so hauling a huge pile around on foot is not exactly a picnic. Thankfully, Starfield lets me get around that by fast traveling from the pilot seat. I load up, sit in the cockpit, and zip away without turning my inventory into a personal black hole. That trick keeps the whole operation smooth, and it means I can bank on Carinae III-a as a reliable little income stream without micromanaging every credit.

So, if you are starting fresh and want a resource moon that punches above its weight, give Carinae III-a a shot. It is not the flashiest place in the Settled Systems, but it is one of the most useful. For me, it is the perfect mix of easy access, rare resources, and steady credits. In Starfield, that is a combo I will take any day of the week.
