If you have been running bounties in Starfield and found a little silver block stamped with a solar system, congratulations: you are holding an Astra. I know it looks like junk, and I know the vendor screen is tempting you. Do not sell it. As of 2026, the Astra loop is still one of the best reasons to slow down before you clear your misc tab. The June 2024 update added Astras alongside the Trackers Alliance, and they remain the key to Stache's rotating stock of rare, epic, and legendary gear. They weigh nothing, they show a value of 5,000 credits, and they are far more valuable as trade tokens than as pocket change.

What Astras Are Actually For

Astra is not just shiny loot. It is a ticket. Once you finish the Trackers Alliance introductory mission and choose your call sign, you can introduce yourself to the other agents and trackers. That is where Stache comes in. He is eccentric, named for his facial hair rather than a secret stash, and he will swap gear for Astras. Bless his eccentric heart, because his exchange rate is simple and brutal:

Astras traded Reward tier
1 Astra Rare item
2 Astras Epic item
3 Astras Legendary item

That table is the whole reason I hoard these tokens. A legendary trade sounds amazing, and sometimes it is. Sometimes Stache hands you a major weapon upgrade that changes your whole build. Other times, he hands you a mining spacesuit you will never wear. That is the gamble. Astra does not care about your build, your fashion sense, or your carefully curated arsenal.

Where to Farm Astras

The Settled Systems are full of unsavory characters, and plenty of them are carrying goodies. Any human enemy, from a low-level pirate to a powerful Ecliptic Warmonger, can spawn with three extra red bars below their normal HP bar. Those bars signal a rare item, and the same enemy may also be carrying an Astra. I have had the best luck when I stop treating every dungeon as a straight line and start checking the big chests.

Here is my practical source list:

  • 🎯 Elite human enemies with three red bars below their health bar

  • 📦 Large storage, military, and science chests at the end of dungeons

  • ✅ The chest at the end of a Trackers Alliance mission, which is guaranteed to have an Astra

  • 🚀 Captain's Lockers on starships

  • 🛰️ Boarded enemy ships, especially when you have the Targeting Control Systems skill

That last point deserves a spotlight. With Targeting Control Systems, you can disable enemy ships and board them. If multiple enemy ships show up together, you can farm Astras faster than running dungeon after dungeon. I am not saying I became a full-time spaceship burglar, but I am saying the Captain's Locker is a beautiful thing.

The Stache Lottery Has Teeth

Astra trading uses a randomized loot system similar to the one that decides which rare item an enemy carries, but with a filter for the tier you paid for. That sounds fair until you remember that Starfield does not promise the legendary item fits your build. You can get a shotgun with perfect legendary effects and then realize it is a basic shotgun already outclassed by your existing arsenal. Ouch.

The loot table also seems weighted toward items common in Akila City. Weapons often land as Laredo firearms like Lawgivers and Bridgers. That makes sense for the source, but it can be frustrating if you do not use those guns. Worse, the trade does not restrict itself to a specific tier of weapon or armor. A high-value trade can still cough up something that feels low-value.

There are unique items in the pool too. The Live Wire is a Kodama that always has the Tesla trait, which can shock enemies. However, that is the only trait it has. It can appear when you trade one Astra, but it can also appear when you trade two or three. So yes, you can pay legendary prices and receive a rare weapon. Do not @ me. I have felt that pain.

My 2026 Astra Routine

After enough disappointing trades, I stopped treating Stache like a vending machine and started treating him like a casino dealer. My routine is simple:

  1. 💾 Save before talking to Stache.

  2. 🎲 Select the trade dialogue and inspect the item.

  3. 🔁 If the item is low-tier junk or a bad fit, reload and try again.

  4. 🧠 Keep the result only if it beats what you already carry.

Items are selected when you choose the trade dialogue, so each reload gives a different result. That is not cheating in my book. It is basic bounty-hunter risk management. Astra is a fun gamble, but it is still a gamble. Stock up, save first, trade second, and hope Stache wakes up in a generous mood. I would still love a future update that removes lower-tier items from high-value trades, but until then, patience is the real legendary trait.
